A desktop study into the possible presence of unexploded ordnance (UXO) was conducted because during World War II several acts of war took place in the municipality of Maastricht.
According to the dutch UXO regulations (WSCS-OCE) at least the mandatory sources shown in the table below must be consulted. Additional sources were also consulted.
In both the early and late years of the war, several acts of war took place in the immediate vicinity of the project area. Close combat took place in Maastricht and the city was shelled and bombed. Also some airplanes crashed within the project area.
This study provides a detailed assessment of the likelihood of encountering UXO and the level of risk it poses. It draws carefully considered conclusions and makes practical recommendations, providing risk mitigation strategies and measures that will effectively meet project requirements in a pragmatic, cost effective manner.
