Client: Rijksvastgoedbedrijf (Provincie Zeeland)
Implementation period: 2016
The Province of Zeeland, in close cooperation with the Ministry of Defence and the Rijksvastgoedbedrijf, is preparing the construction of the Michiel Adriaanszoon de Ruijter barracks in Zeeland. The barracks (almost 70 ha in size), a new accommodation for the navy to be used from 2020, will be located east of the Buitenhaven in Vlissingen. In the context of preparations for the barracks, BODAC was commissioned by the Rijksvastgoedbedrijf to perform UXO clearance in an area of 41.6 ha.
BODAC found five 500 pounders from World War II on the site. Vlissingen was the target of multiple heavy bombings during World War II. The Explosives Disposal Service blew up the bombs in a controlled explosion in July 2016.
